Press Relief funding boosts mental health project
Friday 10 September 2010—Cambridge
The funding of a lap-top and camera for local mental health charity Cam-mind by Cambridge News charity Press Relief is supporting a ground-breaking project that tackles stigma and discrimination — and trains local people in basic Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) skills.
Cam-mind, in Chesterton Road, is among the first organisations locally to offer the nationally-recognised MHFA course which provides participants with the skills they need to recognise the symptoms of mental health problems, provide initial help to someone in distress and to guide a person towards appropriate professional help.
“This funding has been invaluable in helping us to deliver the MHFA course and other awareness — raising information locally,” says Cam-mind MHFA Instructor Aly Anderson. “At least one in four of us experience a mental health problem at some point in our lives — and it is our family, friends and work colleagues who are most likely to notice the early symptoms.
“The MHFA course raises awareness, tackles the many myths that surround mental ill-health and gives people the skills and confidence to help somebody in mental distress rather than feeling at a loss and maybe walking the other way.”
Cam-mind supports local people experiencing mental health problems such as depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. For further information about the charity and MHFA training, please log on to www.Cam-mind.org.uk and www.mhfaengland.org
